Voyager Model 1/32 Ju87G STUKA "KANONENVOGEL" for Hasegawa kit






Ju 87 G-2 "Kanonenvogel" with its twin Bordkanone BK 3.7, 37mm underwing gun pods.With the G variant the aging airframe of the Ju 87 found new life as an anti-tank aircraft. This was the final operational version of the Stuka and was deployed on the Eastern Front. The change in German military fortunes after 1943 and the appearance of huge numbers of well armoured Soviet tanks caused Junkers to adapt the existing design to combat this new threat. The Hs 129B had proved a potent ground attack weapon, but its large fuel tanks made it vulnerable to enemy fire, prompting the RLM to say "that in the shortest possible time a replacement of the Hs 129 type must take place".[64] With Soviet tanks the priority targets, the development of a further variant as a successor to the Ju 87 D began in November 1942. On 3 November Erhard Milch raised the question of replacing the Ju 87, or redesigning it altogether. It was decided to keep the design as it was, but the powerplant would be upgraded to a Jumo 211J, and two 30 mm (1.18 in) weapons added. The variant would also be designed to enable it to carry a 1,000 kg (2,200 lb) free-fall bomb load. Furthermore the armoured protection of the Ilyushin Il-2 Sturmovik was copied, to protect the crew from ground fire now that the Ju 87 would be asked to conduct low level attacks. Hans-Ulrich Rudel, a Stuka ace, had suggested using two 37 mm (1.46 in) Flak 18 guns, each one in a self-contained under-wing gun pod, as the Bordkanone BK 3.7, after achieving success against Soviet tanks with the 20 mm MG 151/20 cannon. These gun pods were fitted to a Ju 87 D-1, W.Nr 2552 as "Gustav the tank killer". The first flight of the machine took place on 31 January 1943 which was piloted by Hauptmann Hans-Karl Stepp. The continuing problems with the Ju 88P-1s equipped BK 7.5 75 mm (2.95 in) cannon meant the Ju 87G was put into production. In April 1943 the first production Ju 87G-1s were delivered to front-line units. The two 37 mm (1.46 in) cannons were mounted in under-wing gun pods, each loaded with a 6-round magazine of armour piercing Tungsten carbide ammunition. With these weapons the Kanonenvogel ("cannon-bird"), as it was nicknamed, proved spectacularly successful at the hands of the Luftwaffe Stuka aces such as Rudel. The G-1 was converted from older D-series airframes retaining the smaller wing but without the dive brakes. The G-2 was similar to the G-1 except using the extended wing of the D-5 with 208 G-2 new built and at least 22 more converted from D-3 airframes. During the Battle of Kursk, only a handful of production Gs were committed. On the opening day of the offensive, Hans-Ulrich Rudel flew the only "official" Ju 87 G, although a significant number of Ju 87 D variants were installed with the 37 mm (1.46 in) cannon, and operated as unofficial Ju 87 Gs before the battle. In June 1943 the RLM ordered 20 Ju 87Gs as production variants.


While still slow, its stable attitude, large wings and low stall speed were valuable in the acquisition of slow moving targets, such as assault boats and ground vehicles. The G-1 even influenced the design of the A-10 Thunderbolt II, with Hans Rudel's book, Stuka Pilot, being required reading for all members of the A-X project.



































Speechless ! I was amazed when I open the box , looking inside for the parts who will promise to superdetail the big , ugly –but deadly in an experienced pilots hands- flying cavalry , the famous Ju-87G Stuka .The company from the far China , have done something great , and the level for the detail set manufacturers is very high now , after the release of this totally covered super set .It’s easy to talk about the…Rolls Royce of any set has any company release in the past about this kit –Hasegawa’s ST25-  because is cover –and upgrade- any of the kit’s part can upgrade , plus more !All starts from cockpit –as usual- and here we talk about a brand new cockpit , building from Voyager parts and sending the kit’s cockpit to the spare box.All the necessary parts are here : floor with complete riveting , sidewalls full of  frames / instruments & fuses / switch boxes , unbelievable wiring all in one of the very best molded yellow colored resin . Talking about molding , the quality of the casting is just excellent , with clever design of the parts , helping the modeler to take the parts from their frames without any loses , many parts are ready for use without any preparation , and everything are absolutely total detailed  without any small foul on it !The cockpit is finished with many photo etched parts –the set containing six frets,one big (15 x 6 cm) one medium (10 X 6 cm) one more smallest (5 x 6 cm)  and three small (5 x 4 cm) with a total of about 200 pieces !In metal are provided the seat belts , ammunition cans and belts , handles , instrument panel boxes and levels , ruder pedals with all the framing , the rear machine gun support frame and a small frame for the front armored panel of the windshield .Also provides a new main instrument panel in clear resin and gelatine with the dial instrument on for a more realistic 3D instrument panel .Here is my only objection for the whole set , the resin of the instruments panel is not “crystal clear” and may need some rubbing with a soft clothe and any compound material , or a bath to some gloss varnish like “Future” .In any case , the result of the cockpit is fantastic !All they need is a good painting / weathering and is ready to fly !Going to the outside of the kit , many parts are waiting to take place : detailed wing radiators in metal , two (!) type of wheels –with or without engraved treads- in resin , a new rudder full of rivets and back formation light , and complete horizontal tail parts , including “moveable” elevators , of course  all full of external links and counterweights .On the nose now , you can find a perfect 3D radiator under the engine , bored exhausts , and  a fantastic propeller with a proportional spinner .Some long and delicate parts in metal replaces the anti skid surfaces on the upper wing and finally.The weaponry comes to give the last details for this plane.Here you will find some amazing parts , that replaces everything except the guns gondola , like ammo boxes , wiring to connect with the lower wing  and the gun barrels in two pieces each one , the main barrel in white metal perfectly machined and the muzzles in brass , with all the holes and openings .Together are coming two perfect and in scale projectiles for any one who like to build a diorama and finally a pitot tube with the opening on the front end .I have not any other words to say about this masterpiece of model kit upgrading , specially if you think the price of it we are talking for a really money worth: about 60 euros and you don’t need anything else to build the ultimate Ju-87G in this scale .OK , maybe an engine , but this is another story…
